Home Filing System

As a small business owner, former bookkeeper and now “home manager” for our family, I understand how important it is to keep important documents & files organized in a way that is not only effective, but EASY!

This is how I’ve organized our family & my small business files for the past six years!

Filing Box

The first thing you’ll need is a filing box or cabinet of some sort. I love this wooden one because I can leave it out on my desk because it’s so cute, but also functional and easy to access whenever I need it.

Hanging Files

Then you just need any hanging files! You will also need to add the tabs with labels on them to keep things organized. You can use a label maker to make it all match, or just write them on. Every family will be slightly different, but these are the ones I am currently using:

  • Medical/Health Insurance

  • Banking

  • Vehicles

  • One for Each Child

  • Receipts(for important or expensive purchases that I don’t want to lose)

  • Taxes

  • Important Documents

  • Bills

  • Misc.

Label Maker

I just got this label maker & I love it! There’s things all over my house I always wish I could label & I finally got around to getting one. I love that you type & “design” the labels on an app so you have a bunch of options on how you want it to look. I used this to label my files, but I’ve hand written them in the past & it works just the same!

PLastic File Bin

You will also need to get a plastic file bin to store the previous year’s files. At the end of the year, I’ll take all of the files and transfer them straight to this bin. I will use a sticky note to note the year if there are multiple years in the bin. It is good practice to keep old files because you will often need to reference them in the future & this way they’re easy to find. You can usually fit at least a few years in one bin.

This system has worked for me for the past 6 years & there’s nothing I would change about it! So if you’ve been looking for a better way to store your files, try this simple system out!
