Spring Family Photo Outfits

As a photographer for the past six years, one of the huge things that I’ve noticed that people stress about when getting their photos taken, is what to wear! So I have a few guidelines that are helpful to follow and here they are along with some inspiration boards of family outfits for you to glean some inspiration from!

How to pick what to wear for family photos:

  • Mom chooses her outfit first! As a mom myself, I know I’m always the last person that I worry about, which means I end up getting my outfit super last minute & just don’t love it, or I pick something that matches everyone else’s, but isn’t very flattering on me. So Mom picks first, and finds something she LOVES! Then build the rest of the outfits around her’s!

    • Flowy dresses that come in at the waist and long cardigans are always very flattering!

  • Coordinate, don’t match. Gone are the days of matchy matchy family photos. Pick neutral colors and solids or simple patterns that go well together, but don’t match.

  • Neutral, soft tones. Keep it natural with colors like khaki, cream, blush, denim, sage green, grey, cream, lavender, etc. Bright & neon colors give a strange looking tint to the skin & aren’t flattering.

  • Minimal patterns. I like to say just one or two patterns that are simple, not crazy busy, and are different from each other if you have more than one. Think floral and stripes, etc. And keep the rest solids!

    • Stay away from thin pinstripes. They may look amazing on you, but they rarely photograph well.

Outfit Inspiration Boards

Seeing outfits put together always helps me visualize how they’re going to look before I buy them, so hopefully this helps you! I’m including the links to everything, but hopefully it’ll help give you an idea of what looks good & you can come up with your own outfits from what you already own and maybe a few pieces to buy if needed.

I made 5 different inspiration boards for you to get ideas from! Copy one totally or use it as inspiration for colors or types of clothing that you can adapt to your specific family! You’ll see how everything is complimentary to each other, yet nothing “matches”. You’ll also see how most of the items are solid. If there are any patterns, they are minimal and compliment the other pattern in the family.
