What's Working & What's Not: August 2025

I had the idea to start a new series about what is working in our family & in our lives & what’s not so I can maybe help if something’s not working in yours! So here it goes!

What’s Working

Couch Naps for my 3 Year Old. He refuses to take naps in his bed and has for months, but still very much needs a nap. So in the afternoon when I put my 1 year old down for her nap, I turn on a show and make him & his older sister have quiet time. He falls asleep 90% of the time and takes a several hour nap on the couch.

Skylight Digital Calendar. Not only has it been nice to have our calendar posted for our family & have it connected to our phones, but it streamlined SO MANY THINGS! Calendars, kids chore charts, my house cleaning schedule, routines, grocery lists, meal plans and so much more I haven’t even explored yet. Highly recommend!

Waking up early. This is one I never thought I’d ever be good at, but for the past 6 weeks, my husband has been leaving for work around 5:45AM & he always says goodbye, so I’ve been waking up at this time instead of when I hear my kids wake up. I’m not super productive, but I wake up, go to the bathroom, put on my moisturizer, make my bed and then get caught up on any social media posts I need to edit or write this blog post like I’m doing right now! Sometimes my kids are up as early as 6, but other mornings it pushes 6:45/7:00 and that hour of silence is GLORIOUS!

What’s Not Working

Breakfast. I have not been good at making breakfast for my kids regularly lately. It’s been a lot of leftovers for me, yogurt, cereal and whatever else. Sometimes some of my kids don’t even eat breakfast because I don’t have a good solid meal made so I need to work on that.

Meal Plans. I know, I know. I am literally a pro meal planner and have my own meal planning business. But with my husband’s long work hours, it is so much harder for me to cook a full meal with three kids running around me and always needed something, and it’s not as fun to cook when he’s not home to enjoy the meal with us. He’s often eating leftovers after we have finished our meal. So I haven’t been great at making a meal plan & I can feel how much it’s stressing me out on those days. I’m trying to plan a few days in advance and that’s going better, but I can’t wait to get back to my solid meal plan every week.

Weeding the Garden. I cannot for the life of me get on top of the weeds in our garden. It’s a jungle out there and you have to wade through the weeds to pick tomatoes. Everything else my husband mows down every week with the lawnmower to make it less of an eyesore. I don’t know if it is just because I started out the season behind because I was so sick with morning sickness or what, but I can’t get on top of them and have just accepted that it is what it is. Maybe next year I’ll go in with a better plan.

So there you have it! I hope this little series helps you feel not as alone because we definitely don’t have it all together over here and you don’t need to either & I hope to come back every month and update you on what is working for our family. And of you have any tips to help me with the things that aren’t working for us, help a girl out! Comment below, shoot me a DM or an email! I welcome any and all advice!
